The idea behind this table design is to make it “float” where nothing is completely bound together yet is still stable. The piece is kept together by diagonal physics, the weight of the glass tabletop and the small imprecisions of the dovetails – no glue, no, nails, no screws – and it can be completely disassembled by hand.
From a furniture design perspective I consider it my finest piece so far. The diagonal construction with the transparent glass table top makes the visual appearance change depending on the viewing angle.
After a long time of building pieces for other people my girlfriend let me know that it was about time that we ourselves got a new table for our living room. It is my first creation using massive oak – and I caried the 3.5m long oak plank home on my shoulder (feeling a bit like Arnold in Comando).
The piece was also one of the last bigger pieces of furniture made in my kitchen.
