Yunika is a dream of doing something real and tangible. See pieces take form and give permanent meaning even if “the power is turned off”. Feeling and seeing wood from a raw state and take form it into a beautiful piece of furniture that solves its purpose.
For me woodworking started as a hobby were I could use my creativity to solve practical problems at home. Missing a chair – needed a place to put my hat – making a cabinet for a HIFI amplifier or building a table for me to sit with the computer. But I also found something else: it’s the creative field were the picture in my mind and the final object are the same – it is as if I “feel the wood” and we work together in forming beautiful pieces – one part design and idea, and another part feeling the wood in the workshop.
Over the last years I have been making a lot of projects and I simply can’t fit all the pieces into our small apartment anymore. To me each piece is much more than a piece of furniture. It’s a piece of hand made unique art of incredibly high quality and every single one comes with its own history and feeling.
Originally Yunika started as “Touch me. Feel me. Love me.” but after massive critique from friends not being able to remember the name I decided to work on a new one. Yunika is a contraction of the words “Yunīku” (Japanese ) and “Unika” (Danish) both meaning unique. The idea evolved with help from many people from my vietnamese childhood friend to a brazilian friend living in England with contacts in Japan. To me it encapsulates my work perfectly: Unique danish design using many japanese hand tools.
First you touch it, then you feel it and then you’ll love it – Yunika!
