I’ve been working within Information Technology for the most of my life and professionally for more than a decade. It doesn’t sound like a long time but in my life with technology I’ve seen cartridges become floppy disk and now cloud storage, the rise of the Internet and mobile computing. The effect technology has had on my life and the world is without doubt fantastic and has both changed and improved – but it is not without downsides.
I think that our culture hasn’t assimilated technology fully and still have a tendency to become slaves instead of “users”. We often end up reacting instead of making a choice – how many times have you Google’d a question during a family dinner or checked up on the actors while watching a movie?
For me woodworking started as a hobby were I could use my creativity to solve practical problems at home. Missing a chair – needed a place to put my hat – making a cabinet for a HIFI amplifier or building a table for me to sit with the computer. But I also found something else: it’s the creative field were the picture in my mind and the final object are the same – it is as if I “feel the wood” and we work together in forming beautiful pieces – one part design and idea, and another part feeling the wood in the workshop.
